If I had a time machine I would go back in time and relive Homebake 1998. How good was Aussie indie rock in the 90s? When bands like You Am I, Spiderbait, Powderfinger, Frenzal Rhomb, Jebediah and Grinspoon were at their peak and Custard, Tumbleweed, Pollyanna, Ammonia, The Superjesus and The Avalanches* still existed.

It was a time when I wasn’t too old for mosh pits and crowd surfing. Back then we use to start most of the circle pits. Wearing Converse All Stars with taped down shoe laces and cargo shorts we ruled the mosh pit. We were hardcore and scared of nothing.

Some things have changed. These days you’ll find me standing a little bit further back, too fragile to enter the mosh pit. But I still refuse to admit I am too old for music festivals. The day I stop going to Homebake will be the day a little bit of me dies.

* Rumour has it that a follow up to their 1997 album Since I Left You is coming… Don’t hold your breath.
