On Saturday May 30th I (Gemdilem) braved the rain and the cold and went to the One Night stand in Sale, Victoria.
When Triple J announced the line up for the One Night Stand I was far from impressed. I’ve never been a big fan of Eskimo Joe or Butterfly Effect and I had seen both the Hilltop Hoods and Children Collide recently. The only part of the line up that got me even a little bit excited about going was Miami Horror, because I had never seen them perform live before and I quite like their EP.
In the end I went to the One Night Stand because it was free, because I’m currently living only 50km from Sale (in the country 50km is considered close, some might say “next door”) and because I had nothing better to do. I guess you could say that I went there with pretty low expectations.

Despite the “meh” line up, the non stop rain and the freezing cold weather I had a really fun day. Lesson learnt: thermals + skinny jeans = tight fit! A lot of the day’s highlights happened away from the bands and between band performances (there was about half an hour between each band). Some of the highlights were wearing gumboots and jumping in puddles (always fun), taking photos of people wearing stupid clothes, eating dagwood dogs, and laughing at people falling over in the mud because they were wearing high heels, thongs or some other inappropriate footwear.

Pink raincoats, matching outfits… Definitely helping these ladies win this guy

I wonder when Beige uggboots and mud seemed like a good idea

Wrong on so many levels. Five seconds later the chick in the pink jeans fell over, I was so busy laughing that I didn’t get a photo. Fail.

The latest fashion accessory?? – a mouthguard with LED lights in it.
All the bands I saw sounded really good. They played really well and you could tell they put their ‘all’ into the performance (prehaps it was because they knew the cameras were rolling for Triple J TV). I didn’t see the local band And Burn because I was still lining up outside but I did see all the others.
Children Collide were really good. I really enjoyed them. I was also pleasantly surprised that I knew all the words to all their songs. Clearly I am closet fan.

Children Collide
Miami Horror were probably the highlight for me because I hadn’t seen them before. I danced up a storm and, for the record, dancing in gumboots is really hard. And it’s almost impossible to do without looking like an unco-ordinated, stomping idiot. Due to my “dancing”, which looked like I was having an epileptic fit, everyone near me gave me plenty of room so I could totally bust out the moves. It was around this point that I think I got on tv. The camera (the high floating one) did a big crowd shot where it was completely focused on me for ages (because of my awesome dancing, clearly). I’m sure I’ll be really easy to spot if the footage does make it to tv – I’m the person wearing a bright blue raincoat, surrounded by no one, looking like I’m having an epileptic fit!
I remembered why I hate the Butterfly Effect. They annoy me and are just not my thing. Although they sounded good I did not enjoy them.
Eskimo Joe opened with that annoying fake bagpipes, bollywood song (aka “Foreign Land”). The music started and then stopped… and then didn’t restart. Everyone from Triple J went into panic mode which was pretty funny and then after about 15 minutes the music started again. I’m sure that made fantastic live radio. Eskimo Joe nearly won me over with an really good performance of “Sarah”. Then they told us all to hug our fellow festival goers. Lame. My dislike towards Eskimo Joe continues.

Hilltop Hoods were great. They played alot of old school and only a few new songs. A pleasant surprise considering they are just about to drop their new album. I love the old school songs because they are fun, party tunes about getting drunk and banging women. I did my best gangsta rap impressions and some really cool dance moves (well I thought so anyway). Totally fun times.

Overall it was a great day. Standing out in the rain and freezing cold, watching bands I don’t particularly like, in the middle of a footy oval doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend a Saturday but amazingly I had an awesome time. Thanks Sale and Triple J for a great day and night out.
